What is a MIAM? | Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting Explained

A Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM) is the first step in the family mediation process. If you're facing disputes over child arrangements, financial matters, or separation, you may need to attend a MIAM mediation before applying to court. The purpose of this meeting is to help you understand how family mediation services work and whether mediation is the right approach for your situation.

Why Do You Need a MIAM?

In most cases, attending a MIAM mediation session is a legal requirement before making a court application for issues related to children or finances. The UK government encourages mediation as a way to resolve disputes without the need for lengthy and costly court proceedings.

During this meeting, a qualified accredited family mediator will:

  • Explain the family mediation process and how it can help resolve disputes.

  • Assess whether mediation services UK are suitable for your case.

  • Discuss mediation costs UK, including who pays for mediation costs in the UK.

  • Provide information about Legal Aid mediation if you are eligible.

If mediation is not suitable, the mediator will issue a MIAM certificate (C100 or Form A), allowing you to proceed with a court application.

What Happens at a MIAM?

A MIAM mediation session is a private, one-on-one meeting with a family mediator. The session typically lasts around 45 minutes to 1 hour and covers:

  • The mediation process, including what to expect in joint sessions.

  • Your family situation and any disputes you need to resolve.

  • Alternative dispute resolution options beyond mediation.

  • Whether Legal Aid for mediation is available for you.

If you and the other party both agree to proceed, you can schedule family mediation sessions to discuss your issues further.

Who Pays for Mediation Costs in the UK?

A common question is who pays for mediation costs in the UK. In most cases, mediation costs are shared equally between both parties, but this can be arranged differently if necessary. If one party is eligible for Legal Aid mediation UK, the MIAM mediation and some sessions may be free for both parties.

Our mediation fees are transparent, with MIAM mediation costs starting from £130. Check our mediation fees UK page for full pricing details.
