Can I get Legal Aid for family mediation?
Legal Aid is available for many people who are on a low income or receive certain benefits. We can check your eligibility confidentially and complete the assessment with you. Even if you are unsure whether you qualify, it's worth asking.
What evidence will I need?
This depends on your circumstances but may include recent payslips, Universal Credit statements, bank statements or benefit letters.
We'll let you know exactly what is needed and guide you through the process.
Will the other person know I've applied for Legal Aid?
Yes. If you qualify for Legal Aid, the other participant will be informed that you are eligible because this affects how the mediation process is funded.
However, your financial circumstances remain completely confidential. We will never share information about your income, benefits, savings or the reasons why you qualify for Legal Aid.
Can I apply for Legal Aid before booking a MIAM?
The Legal Aid assessment is completed as part of your MIAM. If you think you may qualify, simply contact us and we'll arrange your appointment and explain what documents you'll need.
Can you help me complete the Legal Aid application?
Yes. Our team will guide you through the Legal Aid application process, explain what evidence you'll need and answer any questions you have. We'll make the process as straightforward and stress-free as possible.
Is Legal Aid completely free?
If you qualify for Legal Aid, your MIAM and mediation sessions may be funded by the Legal Aid Agency. Depending on your circumstances, other support may also be available. We'll explain exactly what is covered before you begin.
How long does the Legal Aid assessment take?
Completing the Legal Aid application form usually only takes a few minutes. Once you've submitted your application and supporting evidence, we'll assess it as quickly as possible.
We receive a high volume of Legal Aid applications, so the assessment process can take a little time. We'll keep you updated on the progress of your application and contact you as soon as we have an outcome.
What happens if only one of us qualifies for Legal Aid?
If one participant qualifies for Legal Aid, the Legal Aid Agency will usually pay for their MIAM, their mediation sessions and the other participant's MIAM. This allows both people to begin mediation without both needing to qualify.
What happens if I don't qualify for Legal Aid?
If you're not eligible, you can still access family mediation. We'll explain our fixed fees, discuss your options and help you decide the most appropriate way forward.
Does Legal Aid cover court proceedings?
Legal Aid for family mediation is different from Legal Aid for court representation. While mediation may be funded if you qualify, Legal Aid for court proceedings is only available in limited circumstances. We'll explain your options during your MIAM.
